IIMM has set up CRIMM in Kolkatta jointly with the Indian Institute
of Social Welfare and Business Management (ISWBM). A MOU was signed
with ISWBM as early as 17th February 1997. ISWBM is the first management
institute of India, setup in 1953 and inaugrated by Pt. Jawahar
Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India. CRIMM was officially
inaugurated on April 04, 1997 at kolkatta.
Activities of CRIMM in brief
- To promote research in Materials Management discipline.
- To create professorship, other faculty and research position
for higher education in Materials Management particularly as modules
of Fellowship/Doctoral Programmes and to conduct research in selected
area of Materials Management and allied disciplines.
- To collaborate with industry for furthering the academic advancement
of Materials Management and its application to industry.
- To take up project consultancy work in Materials Management.
Centre will act as a nodal point for co-ordination and integration
of research information in the field of Materials Management for
on going and completed research work in other countries.

Activities
The formal inauguration of the Center was held on 4th
April, 1997 in kolkatta. Prof. Satya Sadhan Chakraborty, Honble
Minister for Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal, inaugurated
the Centre. In the first year some Full Time Research Associates
have been appointed whose research studies are in progress in different
facets of Materials Management studies "Characteristics
of Efficient Materials Management System A Comparative Study",
"Quality Assurance in Materials Management A TQM Approach"
etc.
A co-operation agreement is being executed by CRIMM with other

- "European Centre for Research in Purchasing & Supply",
Vienna, Austria.
- "Centre for Advanced Purchasing Studies", Arizona,
USA.
- "Centre for Advanced Purchasing Studies for Africa",
Johannesburg, South Africa.
CRIMM is being being considered as a Research Centre in Asia under
IFPMM. Thereby it will have a global recognition.
Research Associates
The candidate should have a Master Degree in any subject/discipline
or equivalent professional Management qualification i.e. PGDBM,
PGDMM etc. with atleast 50% marks in aggregate at the graduation
and post-graduation level. The candidate should have experience
in working in Materials Management discipline or allied areas in
industries. In case of highly experienced candidate in the field
of Materials Management, and/or Engineering Graduates, Master Degree
may be dispensed with. Preference will be given to industries sponsored
candidates and in that event the area and tenure of research studies
will be as per specific requirement of the respective industry.
The Centre will provide all support to the industry to sort out
their specific problems through research studies by providing research
guide to the researcher, library facilities, computer lab, national
and international periodicals and journals and necessary counselling
and analysis of the problems. The fees for such research studies
will depend on the specific problem/area and the tenure, which will
be borne by the sponsoring organisation.
Those who will take up such Fellowship research studies on their
own expenses, will have to bear the expenditure on their own. The
Research Associates, both sponsored and non-sponsored candidates,
may undertake such research studies simultaneously with their normal
working in the organisation by attending the Centre from time to
time as per instructions to be given by the research guide. Except
in case of specific requirement of research studies by industries
for short tenure, in all other cases the tenure of the full programme
will be for 2 years.
The duration of study will comprise basic theoretical course required
for carrying out the research, project, field survey, data collection,
system study, conceptual analysis of the problems and going through
dissertation exercise.
Research Project
The Research Project selected by the researcher will have to
be approved by the Board. The final assessment will be made at the
end of second year based on which the Research Paper will be forwarded
to the Board. The researcher will have to present his case before
a selected audience through a Seminar/Symposium. The Board shall
be free to suggest changes if required in the project undertaken
by the researcher. After incorporating the changes, the dissertation
shall be submitted to the Board for examination of the thesis. The
thesis will have to be examined by the Board. The majority decision
shall prevail in awarding the fellowship.
Advance Management Development Programme
CRIMM will take up research oriented management development
programme for industries as per specific requirement.
Governing Committee
A steering Committee has been constituted to oversee the working
of the centre consisting of seven members, three from IISWBM, three
from IIMM and one from industry.

Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management
(IISWBM), established in 1953, is the first management institute
in india. The institute conducts various management courses MBA
(affilated to Calcutta University), DSW (C.U. ), Diploma in Industrial
Safety (C.U.), PGDBM, PGDHRM, Public System Management- Environment
Management, Energy Management, Transport Management and Hospital
Management - all recognised by AICTE, Government of India and Diploma
in Travel & Tourism - a programme of the tourism Deptt., Govt.
of India. In addition, a number of management Development Programmes
are undertaken at the Institute.
IISWBM has got an excellent library with more than 40,000 books,
a large number of national and international journals and periodicals
covering all area of professional management. The Library is equipped
with electronic library and multimedia facilities.
The Institute has got excellent Computer centres consisting of Business
Intelligence Lab, Cyber Lab etc. In addition to the computers provided
in each and every department, the Institute network is connected
through a 64 KBPS leased line.
The faculty strength of the institute is equipped with 45 Full time
professors, Assistant Professors, Visiting Professors, Lecturers
and 10 Research Fellows/Research Associates/Teaching Assistants.
At present there are about 2000 students in the institute undergoing
studies in various courses. Hostel accomodation is available to
both men and women students. Two hostels for men at Salt Lake and
one Hospital is adjacent to the institute Campus are available.
The hostel for women is situated near the Institute.
